Heritage Information
A casual glance at this wonderful brick frontage suggests that the house is Georgian. However, look more carefully and you will see that it has four bays on the second floor, five bays on the first floor and six bays on the ground floor. The re-fronting was added to an ancient timber-frame house, probably in 1710.
The structure of the timber frame has been carefully investigated and this reveals that in the heart of the house, on the north side, is an ancient 15th or 16th century open hall.
Re-fronting of much of the High Street in Hungerford was carried out during the prosperous years of the coaching era to modernise the properties. This building was perhaps one of the earliest to have a “make-over”.
