6. Bedwyn Turnback Siding


Local services returning eastwards require a turnback siding to avoid blocking the main line during scheduled stopovers. This is provided in a field next to the church beyond the station. It is the site of one of many footpath crossings over the railway, in this case linking the church with the canal towpath. A heavy (and largely unstoppable) stone train is passing at speed down the gradient over the crossing. These are clearly dangerous locations for footpath users and the greatest care should be exercised when crossing:
