The Hungerford Extravaganza

In a season awash with pop-up “experiences,” Hungerford’s Victorian Extravaganza remains the real thing: community-made, gloriously nostalgic and now in its 34th year. From 5pm, the High Street transforms into a living Christmas card — a bustle of stalls and steam engines, the whoosh of a big wheel, and fairground rides that light up young faces. Entry is free, as it always has been, because this town understands that tradition should be shared, not ticketed.

There’s a magic here you can’t order online. Santa’s Grotto will be humming, Dancer & Prancer will be clip-clopping past shopfronts, and a farmyard nativity will remind us that Christmas begins not with glitter, but with kindness. Then there are the Hungerford Christmas Lights — widely regarded as the South’s best — casting their fairy-dust glow over a market town that never forgets how to welcome its neighbours home.
